Residence at Gutenberg

The Residence Program offers housing and food services both to Gutenberg College students and to other young adults who either attend other colleges in Eugene or work in the community. Gutenberg students are not required to live in student housing, and acceptance for residence is separate from acceptance as a student at Gutenberg College.

Meals Program

An evening meal, prepared by a staff cook, is provided each weekday. Residents are encouraged to enjoy lively conversation and community time at meals. Residents are assigned refrigerator and pantry space to store food, and they are allowed to use the kitchen to prepare their breakfasts, lunches, weekend dinners, and snacks.

Cost

The cost for residency ranges from $3375 to $4050 for the academic year (equivalent to $375 to $450 per month). This cost includes a room, the Meals Program, the Resident Activity Program (annual retreat, holiday parties, etc.), and household supplies. Residents pay nine equal payments throughout the course of the Residence Program.

Incoming residents reserve their room by paying one of the nine payments (equivalent to first month’s rent); this payment is nonrefundable. A second payment (equivalent to last month’s rent) is due when the student moves in. The remaining seven payments are due on the first of each month starting with October 1 and ending April 1. A $100 refundable damage-and-cleaning deposit and a $30 refundable key deposit are also due when the resident moves in. (Residents responsible for damaging college property must pay any costs in excess of the damage-and-cleaning deposit for cleaning, repairing, or replacing that property.)

Returning residents may reserve a room for the following year by paying one of the nine Residence Program payments due for the following year or by leaving their damage-and-cleaning deposit on account and signing the Residency Agreement for the following year.

Application Process

To apply for residence, you must read the Resident Handbook and send a completed "Application for Residence" and a $20 application fee to Gutenberg College. (The application fee is waived for students also applying to Gutenberg's undergraduate program.) After your application has been received, an interview with the resident house manager(s) will be scheduled.

March 1 is the deadline for students to apply for fall housing. Student housing is limited and fills up quickly. Qualified applicants are admitted in the order in which they apply, and applicants for whom no room is available are placed on a waiting list. Gutenberg students are urged to apply early.

Although students are urged to apply by March 1, the Residence Program accepts applications throughout the year, and rooms occasionally become available. These vacancies are offered first to people on the housing waiting list and then made available to new applicants.

Housing is also available during the summer. See "Summer Rentals."
